Fotokroniek #64 met Dustin Thierry

DuPho_Agenda_Fotokroniek_Dustin_Thierry.png

With his work, Dustin Thierry has been researching the Afro-Caribbean identity in the Netherlands. His new series 'Opulence' focusses on the ballroom scene in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan and Berlin. Stigmatisation and rejection of homosexuality and queer identity is still a large issue within the Caribbean community. On the other hand queer people are increasingly radicalised and objectified. In an attempt to break through the prejudices within this contradiction, Dustin's portraits are unadorned, raw yet graceful. What drives him as a creator? How do you catch the essence of an individual in a still image?

Series: Opulence

In the spring of 2018 Dustin started to document the ballroom scene in Amsterdam, Paris, Milan and Berlin. Balls, probably best known from the famous documentary Paris Is burning from 1990, are underground gatherings of mostly LGBTQ+ people who compete for trophies and prices through voguing and runways in different categories. Competition is fierce and the creativity of the outfits and performances is of an incredible extravagance and quality.
