In Jitske Schols' work, memories and imaginations from the past play an important role. Growing up on an estate that was inhabited and visited by many great artists over the centuries is an inexhaustible source of inspiration to her. Her work is strongly influenced by those late nineteenth century Dutch artists who lived and worked at the same place where she grew up a hundred years later. Works by artists like Willem Witsen, W.B. Tholen or Piet Meiners who had their studio’s there. Or by their artistic contemporaries who regularly visited that place, such as Jan Veth, Breitner or Mauve. The atmosphere in their works can be characterized as melancholy, sober and often dark scenes. Impressionism and naturalism plays an important role.

After working for 20 years as a communications advisor, Jitske Schols decided to commit herself to photography. Works by Jitske Schols were shown at the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam in the exhibition ‘Ode to an Amsterdammer’ organized by Dutch National Portrait Gallery and in the exhibition MS Oranje | Changing Course. She had a duo exhibition at Galerie Caroline O’Breen and participated at Haute Photographie. In 2017 she won the Dutch National Portrait Prize for the best portrait of 2016. Het Parool, Volkskrant and AD belong to her regular customer base.
